About the Cardinal Tetra

Cardinal tetras are small South American schooling fish with a bright blue stripe and red colouring along most of the body. They resemble neon tetras, but they are a separate species with slightly different preferences.

They are calm community fish that depend on a good-sized school for security.

Health risks to know about

Important concerns include poor water quality, transport stress, parasites, bacterial disease, wasting and chronic stress from unstable conditions.

Gasping, fading colour, clamped fins, white spots, rapid weight loss or separating from the school needs prompt investigation.

Tank, water and equipment

Use a mature, fully cycled, heated and filtered aquarium with stable warm water, planted cover and a long open area for schooling.

Avoid sudden changes in temperature or chemistry, and quarantine new fish before they join an established school.

Food and feeding

Offer a complete small tropical-fish food with suitable tiny frozen or live foods for variety.

Feed modest portions in more than one spot so every fish gets food without leftovers collecting.

Behaviour, tank mates and enrichment

Coordinated group movement and retreating into cover when startled are normal. A fish that stays apart may be stressed or unwell.

Keep them with peaceful fish that share their warm-water needs and cannot swallow them.

When to contact an aquatic veterinarian

Get help for gasping, collapse, severe wounds, major swelling, inability to stay upright, rapid unexplained deaths or a problem that continues after water parameters are corrected.

Test ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH, temperature whenever behaviour changes. Water quality is part of the medical history, so record results before contacting an aquatic veterinarian.
