About the Chili Rasbora

Chili rasboras are very small red schooling fish from slow, plant-filled waters in Southeast Asia. Their tiny bodies and mouths make them a better fit for a calm, established aquarium than a busy mixed community.

They may look washed out after transport and colour up once settled into a secure group.

Health risks to know about

Common concerns include starvation, ammonia or nitrite poisoning, transport stress, parasites, bacterial disease and being pulled into an unguarded filter intake.

A hollow belly, gasping, clamped fins, fading colour, sores or leaving the group needs prompt attention.

Tank, water and equipment

Use a mature, fully cycled, heated and gently filtered aquarium with dense plants, shaded areas, open group space and a guarded intake.

Keep the flow gentle and the water stable. Small volume does not excuse an uncycled or unstable setup.

Food and feeding

Offer a complete micro food small enough to swallow, plus suitable tiny frozen or live foods for variety.

Watch each feeding closely because larger or faster tank mates can take everything first.

Behaviour, tank mates and enrichment

Loose grouping, short displays and weaving through plants are normal. A generous school helps these tiny fish feel secure.

Choose equally peaceful tank mates that cannot swallow them and will not overwhelm them at feeding time.

When to contact an aquatic veterinarian

Get help for gasping, collapse, severe wounds, major swelling, inability to stay upright, rapid unexplained deaths or a problem that continues after water parameters are corrected.

Test ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH, temperature whenever behaviour changes. Water quality is part of the medical history, so record results before contacting an aquatic veterinarian.
