About the Congo Tetra
Congo tetras are larger African tetras with iridescent colour and flowing fins, especially in mature males. They need more swimming room than the small tetras commonly sold for compact community tanks.
A balanced school helps them feel secure and lets their natural displays show without focusing all attention on one fish.
Health risks to know about
Important concerns include poor water quality, fin damage, parasites, bacterial disease, nutritional problems and stress from crowding or rough tank mates.
Gasping, clamped or torn fins, sores, swelling, rapid weight loss or persistent hiding needs prompt investigation.
Tank, water and equipment
Use a long, mature, fully cycled and filtered aquarium with plant cover, a secure lid and plenty of open swimming space.
Plan around adult size and group needs rather than the size of juveniles in the shop.
Food and feeding
Offer a complete omnivore food with suitable frozen, live and plant-based variety.
Distribute food through the group so less assertive fish are not left out.
Behaviour, tank mates and enrichment
Loose schooling, male displays and quick open-water swimming are normal. Constant chasing or hiding is not.
Avoid aggressive companions and dedicated fin nippers that may damage the males' longer fins.
When to contact an aquatic veterinarian
Get help for gasping, collapse, severe wounds, major swelling, inability to stay upright, rapid unexplained deaths or a problem that continues after water parameters are corrected.
Test ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH, temperature whenever behaviour changes. Water quality is part of the medical history, so record results before contacting an aquatic veterinarian.
