About the Dwarf Gourami

Dwarf gouramis are colourful labyrinth fish that breathe through gills and also visit the surface for air. They prefer warm, calm water with cover near the surface.

Males may become territorial, and some commercial lines have serious inherited or infectious health problems.

Health risks to know about

Common concerns include poor water quality, dwarf gourami iridovirus, parasites, bacterial disease, bloating, fin damage and stress from aggressive tank mates.

Gasping beyond normal surface breaths, sores, colour loss, swelling, wasting or abnormal swimming needs veterinary guidance.

Tank, water and equipment

Use a fully cycled, heated and gently filtered aquarium with plants, floating cover, open surface access and low current.

Keep the lid secure and air above the water warm. Use sight breaks if housing more than one territorial fish.

Food and feeding

Offer a complete gourami or tropical-fish food with suitable frozen or live foods for variety.

Feed small measured portions and remove excess.

Behaviour, tank mates and enrichment

Surface breathing, exploring plants and bubble-nest building are normal. Persistent chasing or hiding signals a compatibility problem.

Choose calm tank mates that share warm-water needs and will not nip fins.

When to contact an aquatic veterinarian

Get help for gasping, collapse, severe wounds, major swelling, inability to stay upright, rapid unexplained deaths or a problem that continues after water parameters are corrected.

Test ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH, temperature whenever behaviour changes. Water quality is part of the medical history, so record results before contacting an aquatic veterinarian.
