About the Freshwater Angelfish

Freshwater angelfish are tall-bodied South American cichlids that need depth as well as length in an aquarium. They may be calm in a community and territorial when pairing or breeding.

Small juveniles become much larger adults and may eat very small tank mates.

Health risks to know about

Important concerns include poor water quality, parasites, fin damage, bacterial infection, nutritional disease and injuries from aggression.

Gasping, clamped fins, white spots, sores, rapid weight loss, swelling or sustained isolation needs water testing and veterinary guidance.

Tank, water and equipment

Use a tall, fully cycled, heated and filtered aquarium with open swimming areas, plants or vertical cover and stable warm water.

Plan adult stocking and provide sight breaks. A breeding pair may claim a large territory.

Food and feeding

Offer a complete cichlid or tropical-fish food with suitable frozen or live foods for variety.

Feed measured portions and make sure shy fish are not excluded.

Behaviour, tank mates and enrichment

Slow cruising, vertical sheltering and territorial displays are normal. Watch whether chasing ends or one fish is kept permanently cornered.

Choose tank mates too large to swallow and calm enough not to nip long fins.

When to contact an aquatic veterinarian

Get help for gasping, collapse, severe wounds, major swelling, inability to stay upright, rapid unexplained deaths or a problem that continues after water parameters are corrected.

Test ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH, temperature whenever behaviour changes. Water quality is part of the medical history, so record results before contacting an aquatic veterinarian.
