About the German Blue Ram

German blue rams are small South American cichlids with bright blue markings and much of the personality of a larger cichlid. They can be peaceful in a suitable community but become territorial around a chosen breeding area.

They prefer warmer water than many common community fish and are sensitive to unstable or immature aquariums.

Health risks to know about

Important concerns include poor water quality, parasites, bacterial disease, wasting, nutritional problems and injuries caused by territorial conflict.

Darkening, clamped fins, rapid breathing, stringy waste, sores, swelling, weight loss or refusing food needs immediate water testing and aquatic-veterinary guidance.

Tank, water and equipment

Use a mature, fully cycled, warm and gently filtered aquarium with soft substrate, planted cover, caves, open feeding areas and very stable conditions.

Choose tank mates that tolerate the same warmth and will not bully the rams or take every food item first.

Food and feeding

Offer a complete small cichlid food with suitable frozen or live foods for variety.

Use small measured meals and make sure shy or subordinate fish are not excluded.

Behaviour, tank mates and enrichment

Pairing, substrate sifting and defending a small territory can be normal. Constant pursuit, hiding or torn fins means the setup is not working.

Provide sight breaks and a backup plan because compatibility can change when a pair forms or spawns.

When to contact an aquatic veterinarian

Get help for gasping, collapse, severe wounds, major swelling, inability to stay upright, rapid unexplained deaths or a problem that continues after water parameters are corrected.

Test ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH, temperature whenever behaviour changes. Water quality is part of the medical history, so record results before contacting an aquatic veterinarian.
