About the Guppy

Guppies are small, active livebearing fish available in many colours and fin shapes. They are social and breed very easily when males and females share a tank.

Long-finned varieties may swim less efficiently and can be targets for fin nipping.

Health risks to know about

Common concerns include poor water quality, parasites, fin rot, wasting, spinal deformity, birth complications and injuries from harassment.

Gasping, clamped fins, white spots, rapid weight loss, abnormal swimming or a sudden group decline needs water testing and veterinary guidance.

Tank, water and equipment

Use a fully cycled, heated and filtered aquarium with plants, open swimming room and stable water chemistry.

Plan stocking around breeding. Separate-sex groups or a clear fry plan prevents rapid overcrowding.

Food and feeding

Offer a complete small tropical-fish food with suitable frozen or live foods for variety.

Feed small portions and remove excess before it degrades water quality.

Behaviour, tank mates and enrichment

Active swimming, displaying and social following are normal. Keep enough cover for fish to avoid persistent attention.

Choose peaceful tank mates that share water needs and will not nip fins or eat adult guppies.

When to contact an aquatic veterinarian

Get help for gasping, collapse, severe wounds, major swelling, inability to stay upright, rapid unexplained deaths or a problem that continues after water parameters are corrected.

Test ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH, temperature whenever behaviour changes. Water quality is part of the medical history, so record results before contacting an aquatic veterinarian.
