About the Harlequin Rasbora

Harlequin rasboras are small, peaceful schooling fish recognised by the dark wedge on each side. Their colour and confidence improve when they have a proper group and a calm environment.

They suit a planted community aquarium with open space for the school to move together.

Health risks to know about

Common concerns include ammonia or nitrite poisoning, parasites, bacterial disease, fin damage, wasting and stress from small groups or aggressive tank mates.

Gasping, colour loss, clamped fins, rubbing, sores, rapid weight loss or leaving the school needs water testing and expert advice.

Tank, water and equipment

Use a mature, fully cycled, heated and filtered aquarium with plants, shaded cover and open swimming room.

Stable conditions matter more than chasing a perfect number. Test the water and avoid sudden changes in temperature or chemistry.

Food and feeding

Offer a complete small tropical-fish food with suitable frozen or live foods for variety.

Use small pieces they can swallow and make sure quieter fish receive food.

Behaviour, tank mates and enrichment

Coordinated schooling, short displays and moving between plants and open water are normal.

Keep a generous same-species group with peaceful tank mates that cannot swallow them.

When to contact an aquatic veterinarian

Get help for gasping, collapse, severe wounds, major swelling, inability to stay upright, rapid unexplained deaths or a problem that continues after water parameters are corrected.

Test ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH, temperature whenever behaviour changes. Water quality is part of the medical history, so record results before contacting an aquatic veterinarian.
