Killifish Starter Care Guide
A practical introduction to killifish care, including health risks, water quality, tank setup, food and behaviour.
Use this guide to notice and organize information. Contact a qualified veterinarian for medical concerns or urgent change.
About the Killifish
Killifish are a large, colourful group found across several continents. Some live in permanent water while annual species are adapted to temporary pools and may have naturally short lives.
Care cannot be based on the word killifish alone. Exact species identification matters for temperature, water chemistry, social grouping and lifespan.
Health risks to know about
Common concerns include ammonia or nitrite poisoning, jumping injuries, parasites, bacterial disease, poor nutrition and stress from boisterous tank mates or incompatible males.
Gasping, clamped fins, sores, swelling, rapid weight loss, colour loss or repeated hiding needs prompt water testing and expert advice.
Tank, water and equipment
Use a fully cycled and filtered aquarium matched to the exact species, with a tightly sealed lid, planted cover, gentle flow and stable water.
Close every cable gap because killifish are skilled jumpers. Provide extra sight breaks if more than one male shares the setup.
Food and feeding
Offer a complete small carnivore or omnivore food appropriate to the species, with suitable frozen or live foods for variety.
Feed measured portions and make sure shy fish are not excluded.
Behaviour, tank mates and enrichment
Surface activity, displays and exploring planted cover are normal. Some males become territorial, while other species are calmer in groups.
Choose peaceful tank mates that share the exact water needs and will not outcompete them for food.
When to contact an aquatic veterinarian
Get help for gasping, collapse, severe wounds, major swelling, inability to stay upright, rapid unexplained deaths or a problem that continues after water parameters are corrected.
Test ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH, temperature whenever behaviour changes. Water quality is part of the medical history, so record results before contacting an aquatic veterinarian.
