About the Kuhli Loach

Kuhli loaches are slender, peaceful bottom fish that are often most active at dusk or after the lights dim. They can disappear into cover for long periods, especially when kept alone or in a bare tank.

They are social fish, not solitary cleanup animals, and need companions, safe hiding places and their own food.

Health risks to know about

Important concerns include poor water quality, parasites, skin injury, starvation, entrapment in decor or filter intakes and stress from unsuitable substrate or small groups.

Gasping, redness, sores, rapid weight loss, swelling or unusual daytime distress needs immediate water testing and expert advice.

Tank, water and equipment

Use a mature, fully cycled, heated aquarium with gentle substrate, smooth caves, leaf litter or plants, protected filter openings and a tightly fitted lid.

Check every gap because kuhli loaches can squeeze into tiny spaces. Keep the bottom clean without stripping the biological filter.

Food and feeding

Feed a complete sinking food after faster fish have eaten, with suitable frozen or live foods for variety.

Do not expect them to survive on scraps. Watch after dark to confirm each loach is eating.

Behaviour, tank mates and enrichment

Hiding by day, group resting, burrowing and energetic evening swimming can all be normal.

Keep them in a generous same-species group with peaceful tank mates that will not compete for every sinking meal.

When to contact an aquatic veterinarian

Get help for gasping, collapse, severe wounds, major swelling, inability to stay upright, rapid unexplained deaths or a problem that continues after water parameters are corrected.

Test ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH, temperature whenever behaviour changes. Water quality is part of the medical history, so record results before contacting an aquatic veterinarian.
