About the Neon Tetra

Neon tetras are tiny schooling fish from soft-water South American habitats. Their confidence, colour and natural movement depend on living in a proper group.

A few isolated fish do not create a functional school and may remain stressed or hidden.

Health risks to know about

Important concerns include poor water quality, parasites, bacterial disease, neon tetra disease, wasting and stress from small groups or aggressive tank mates.

Gasping, colour loss, separating from the school, curved posture, cysts, rapid weight loss or group deaths needs immediate investigation.

Tank, water and equipment

Use a mature, fully cycled, heated and filtered aquarium with plants, shaded cover and open horizontal swimming space.

Keep water stable. Sudden parameter changes can be harder on small fish than slightly imperfect but consistent conditions.

Food and feeding

Offer a complete food small enough to swallow, with suitable frozen or live foods for variety.

Feed small amounts so shy fish receive food without leaving waste.

Behaviour, tank mates and enrichment

Coordinated schooling, brief chasing and moving between cover and open water are normal.

Keep a substantial same-species group with peaceful tank mates that cannot swallow them.

When to contact an aquatic veterinarian

Get help for gasping, collapse, severe wounds, major swelling, inability to stay upright, rapid unexplained deaths or a problem that continues after water parameters are corrected.

Test ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH, temperature whenever behaviour changes. Water quality is part of the medical history, so record results before contacting an aquatic veterinarian.
