About the Panda Corydoras

Panda corydoras are small armoured catfish with dark patches around the eyes, dorsal fin and tail. They are social bottom foragers and should live in a good-sized same-species group.

They often suit the cooler end of tropical community conditions, so tank mates should be chosen around compatible temperatures rather than appearance alone.

Health risks to know about

Common concerns include barbel erosion, ammonia or nitrite poisoning, parasites, bacterial disease, starvation and stress from warm, dirty or poorly oxygenated water.

Repeated gasping, red skin, damaged barbels, swelling, weight loss or separating from the group needs prompt investigation.

Tank, water and equipment

Use a mature, fully cycled and filtered aquarium with smooth sand or fine rounded substrate, shaded cover, open bottom space and good oxygenation.

Match temperature to this species, keep the substrate clean and avoid sharp gravel that can damage sensitive barbels.

Food and feeding

Offer a complete sinking catfish food with suitable frozen or live foods for variety. Leftovers from surface fish are not a feeding plan.

Place food in more than one area so every cory can forage.

Behaviour, tank mates and enrichment

Group foraging, resting together and quick trips to the surface for air are normal.

Choose peaceful tank mates that share their temperature needs and will not keep them away from food.

When to contact an aquatic veterinarian

Get help for gasping, collapse, severe wounds, major swelling, inability to stay upright, rapid unexplained deaths or a problem that continues after water parameters are corrected.

Test ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH, temperature whenever behaviour changes. Water quality is part of the medical history, so record results before contacting an aquatic veterinarian.
