About the Pearl Danio

Pearl danios are bright, fast schooling fish with a pearly blue or violet sheen. They are active swimmers like zebra danios and need more length and group space than their modest body size suggests.

They are generally hardy once settled, but an active fish still depends on a cycled aquarium and steady care.

Health risks to know about

Common concerns include ammonia or nitrite poisoning, jumping injuries, parasites, bacterial disease, fin damage and stress from a group that is too small.

Gasping, clamped fins, rubbing, sores, rapid weight loss or frantic dashing needs prompt water testing and expert advice.

Tank, water and equipment

Use a fully cycled and filtered aquarium with a secure lid, planted cover, open horizontal swimming space, moderate current and good oxygenation.

Match the temperature to the exact stock and tank mates instead of assuming every tropical community should be very warm.

Food and feeding

Offer a complete small omnivore food with suitable frozen or live foods for variety.

Spread measured portions across the surface so the full school can feed.

Behaviour, tank mates and enrichment

Fast schooling, brief chases and quick turns are normal. A generous group helps spread social attention.

Choose active, peaceful tank mates and avoid slow long-finned fish that may be stressed or nipped.

When to contact an aquatic veterinarian

Get help for gasping, collapse, severe wounds, major swelling, inability to stay upright, rapid unexplained deaths or a problem that continues after water parameters are corrected.

Test ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH, temperature whenever behaviour changes. Water quality is part of the medical history, so record results before contacting an aquatic veterinarian.
