About the Goldfish

Goldfish are social carp relatives that grow much larger and live much longer than a bowl suggests. Common-bodied and fancy varieties have different adult size and swimming ability.

They produce substantial waste and need strong filtration, high oxygen and large adult housing.

Health risks to know about

Important concerns include ammonia or nitrite poisoning, buoyancy problems, parasites, bacterial infection, fin damage, constipation and deformity-related issues in fancy varieties.

Gasping, red streaks, bottom sitting, rapid swelling, pineconing or inability to swim normally needs immediate water testing and veterinary advice.

Tank, water and equipment

Use a large, fully cycled aquarium or suitable pond sized for adult fish, with powerful filtration and good surface agitation.

Test water regularly and perform consistent partial changes with conditioned, temperature-matched water.

Food and feeding

Feed a varied, complete goldfish diet in portions the fish can finish without leaving waste. Sinking foods may help some fancy goldfish avoid gulping excess air.

Include suitable plant matter and adjust the amount to temperature, activity and body condition.

Behaviour, tank mates and enrichment

Foraging, social swimming and investigating substrate are normal. Compatible goldfish company can be valuable when space and filtration are adequate.

Avoid sharp decor and fast or aggressive tank mates, especially with slow fancy varieties.

When to contact an aquatic veterinarian

Get help for gasping, collapse, severe wounds, major swelling, inability to stay upright, rapid unexplained deaths or a problem that continues after water parameters are corrected.

Test ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH, temperature whenever behaviour changes. Water quality is part of the medical history, so record results before contacting an aquatic veterinarian.
