About the Corydoras Catfish

Corydoras are small armoured catfish that search the bottom with sensitive barbels and regularly dash to the surface for air. Many species are kept, and adult size varies.

They are social fish and should live in a proper same-species group rather than alone.

Health risks to know about

Common concerns include barbel erosion, poor water quality, parasites, bacterial infection, starvation, injuries from sharp substrate and stress from small groups.

Gasping beyond normal surface trips, red skin, damaged barbels, bloating, weight loss or isolation needs water testing and veterinary advice.

Tank, water and equipment

Use a mature cycled tank with gentle substrate, open bottom foraging space, shaded cover and good oxygenation.

Keep the bottom clean without stripping the biological filter, and match temperature and water chemistry to the exact species.

Food and feeding

Feed a complete sinking food rather than expecting corydoras to survive on leftovers. Add suitable frozen or live foods for variety.

Place food where every fish can reach it after faster tank mates feed.

Behaviour, tank mates and enrichment

Group foraging, resting together and quick surface trips are normal. Provide a substantial group of the same species.

Avoid aggressive tank mates and coarse or sharp substrate that can damage barbels.

When to contact an aquatic veterinarian

Get help for gasping, collapse, severe wounds, major swelling, inability to stay upright, rapid unexplained deaths or a problem that continues after water parameters are corrected.

Test ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH, temperature whenever behaviour changes. Water quality is part of the medical history, so record results before contacting an aquatic veterinarian.
