About the Cherry Barb
Cherry barbs are small, peaceful schooling fish. Males can develop a deep cherry-red colour, while females are usually more softly coloured.
They are generally calmer than tiger barbs, but they still need a social group and enough cover to feel secure.
Health risks to know about
Common concerns include poor water quality, parasites, bacterial disease, fin damage, wasting and stress from inadequate group size or aggressive tank mates.
Gasping, clamped fins, white spots, sores, rapid weight loss or isolating from the group needs water testing and expert advice.
Tank, water and equipment
Use a fully cycled, heated and filtered aquarium with a secure lid, dense planted cover and open space for group swimming.
Keep conditions stable and leave enough room for shy fish to move away from displays or chasing.
Food and feeding
Offer a complete small omnivore food with suitable frozen, live and plant-based variety.
Spread small portions through the group so quieter fish can eat.
Behaviour, tank mates and enrichment
Loose schooling, plant exploration and brief displays are normal. Cherry barbs often move more calmly than other commonly kept barbs.
Keep a generous same-species group with peaceful tank mates that will not intimidate or outcompete them.
When to contact an aquatic veterinarian
Get help for gasping, collapse, severe wounds, major swelling, inability to stay upright, rapid unexplained deaths or a problem that continues after water parameters are corrected.
Test ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH, temperature whenever behaviour changes. Water quality is part of the medical history, so record results before contacting an aquatic veterinarian.
