About the Celestial Pearl Danio

Celestial pearl danios are tiny spotted fish, also sold under the older name galaxy rasbora. They are true danios, but they are shyer and less built for nonstop open-water swimming than zebra danios.

They feel safest in a well-planted aquarium with a good-sized social group.

Health risks to know about

Common concerns include poor water quality, parasites, bacterial disease, starvation, jumping and stress from rough tank mates or too many competing males.

Gasping, clamped fins, torn fins, a hollow belly, colour loss or constant hiding needs prompt investigation.

Tank, water and equipment

Use a mature, fully cycled and filtered aquarium with dense plant cover, calm areas, a secure lid and stable water that is not kept excessively warm.

Provide sight breaks and enough floor and plant area for fish to move away from repeated displays.

Food and feeding

Offer a complete micro pellet or crushed food with suitable tiny frozen or live foods for variety.

Feed in several small areas so shy and lower-ranking fish can eat.

Behaviour, tank mates and enrichment

Plant exploration, short male displays and loose grouping are normal. They may hide when first introduced.

Choose small, peaceful tank mates and watch that energetic fish do not keep them away from food.

When to contact an aquatic veterinarian

Get help for gasping, collapse, severe wounds, major swelling, inability to stay upright, rapid unexplained deaths or a problem that continues after water parameters are corrected.

Test ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH, temperature whenever behaviour changes. Water quality is part of the medical history, so record results before contacting an aquatic veterinarian.
