About the Boesemani Rainbowfish

Boesemani rainbowfish are colourful, athletic schooling fish that become substantially larger than the juveniles sold in stores. Mature males can show a blue front half and orange rear half.

They need a group, clean oxygen-rich water and a long aquarium that lets them swim at speed.

Health risks to know about

Common concerns include poor water quality, parasites, bacterial disease, fin damage, wasting and injuries caused by crowding or frantic movement.

Gasping, clamped fins, sores, swelling, rapid weight loss, colour loss or leaving the school needs prompt investigation.

Tank, water and equipment

Use a long, fully cycled, heated and well-filtered aquarium with a secure lid, open swimming room, planted edges and good surface movement.

Plan around adult group size. A tank that suits small juveniles may become cramped quickly.

Food and feeding

Offer a high-quality omnivore food with suitable frozen, live and plant-based variety.

Feed measured portions across a wide area so every fish can reach the food.

Behaviour, tank mates and enrichment

Fast schooling, displaying and short chases are normal. A generous group helps spread social pressure.

Choose robust but peaceful tank mates. Very small, timid or slow fish may be overwhelmed by their activity.

When to contact an aquatic veterinarian

Get help for gasping, collapse, severe wounds, major swelling, inability to stay upright, rapid unexplained deaths or a problem that continues after water parameters are corrected.

Test ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH, temperature whenever behaviour changes. Water quality is part of the medical history, so record results before contacting an aquatic veterinarian.
