About the Black Neon Tetra
Black neon tetras are active South American schooling fish with a bright pale stripe over a darker stripe. Despite the name, they are not a colour form of the neon tetra.
They are generally peaceful and a little sturdier-looking than some tiny tetras, but still need a real school and stable water.
Health risks to know about
Common concerns include poor water quality, parasites, bacterial disease, fin damage, wasting and stress from inadequate group size.
Gasping, clamped fins, rubbing, sores, rapid weight loss or isolating from the group needs water testing and expert advice.
Tank, water and equipment
Use a fully cycled, heated and filtered aquarium with a secure lid, planted edges and open swimming space.
Keep temperature and chemistry steady, and leave enough room for the school to move without constantly meeting territorial fish.
Food and feeding
Offer a complete small omnivore food with suitable frozen or live foods for variety.
Feed small portions that reach the whole school and remove leftovers.
Behaviour, tank mates and enrichment
Active schooling, brief displays and exploring the middle and upper water are normal.
Choose peaceful community fish and avoid companions that nip, bully or grow large enough to eat them.
When to contact an aquatic veterinarian
Get help for gasping, collapse, severe wounds, major swelling, inability to stay upright, rapid unexplained deaths or a problem that continues after water parameters are corrected.
Test ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH, temperature whenever behaviour changes. Water quality is part of the medical history, so record results before contacting an aquatic veterinarian.
