About the White Cloud Mountain Minnow

White Cloud Mountain minnows are small, active schooling fish from cool, fast-moving streams. They are often sold as beginner fish, but they still need a cycled tank, companions and stable water.

They suit a cooler indoor aquarium better than a warm tropical community and should not be treated as feeder fish or temporary goldfish companions.

Health risks to know about

Common concerns include ammonia or nitrite poisoning, low oxygen, parasites, bacterial disease, fin damage and stress from a group that is too small.

Gasping, clamped fins, rubbing, sores, colour loss, rapid weight loss or leaving the school needs prompt water testing and expert advice.

Tank, water and equipment

Use a fully cycled and filtered aquarium with a secure lid, planted cover, open swimming room, moderate flow and good surface movement.

Keep the water cool but stable and check the temperature rather than assuming an unheated room will always stay in range.

Food and feeding

Offer a complete small omnivore food with suitable frozen or live foods for variety.

Feed measured portions that the whole school can finish without leaving waste.

Behaviour, tank mates and enrichment

Active group swimming, displaying and short chases are normal. A generous school helps them feel secure.

Choose peaceful, cool-water tank mates that cannot swallow them and do not need a much warmer setup.

When to contact an aquatic veterinarian

Get help for gasping, collapse, severe wounds, major swelling, inability to stay upright, rapid unexplained deaths or a problem that continues after water parameters are corrected.

Test ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH, temperature whenever behaviour changes. Water quality is part of the medical history, so record results before contacting an aquatic veterinarian.
