About the African Cichlid
African cichlid is a broad aquarium label covering many species from different lakes and river systems. Adult size, diet, aggression and water chemistry can differ sharply.
Exact species identification is essential before choosing tank size, companions or food.
Health risks to know about
Important concerns include aggression injuries, poor water quality, bloat, parasites, nutritional disease, mouth or fin damage and stress from incorrect stocking.
Gasping, swelling, stringy waste, rapid weight loss, wounds, clamped fins or sustained hiding needs immediate water testing and expert advice.
Tank, water and equipment
Build the aquarium around the exact species and adult group, using stable hard alkaline water when appropriate, powerful filtration and carefully arranged rock territories.
Cycle the tank completely and monitor ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH, hardness and temperature.
Food and feeding
Choose food for the exact species. Some African cichlids are algae grazers while others need more animal protein, and the wrong diet can cause serious disease.
Feed measured portions and prevent dominant fish from excluding others.
Behaviour, tank mates and enrichment
Territory defence, displays and chasing can be normal, but constant injury or exclusion is not. Stocking advice must be species-specific.
Use sight breaks and a quarantine plan, and never mix fish simply because they share the label African cichlid.
When to contact an aquatic veterinarian
Get help for gasping, collapse, severe wounds, major swelling, inability to stay upright, rapid unexplained deaths or a problem that continues after water parameters are corrected.
Test ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH, temperature whenever behaviour changes. Water quality is part of the medical history, so record results before contacting an aquatic veterinarian.
