About the Threadfin Rainbowfish

Threadfin rainbowfish are small, delicate schooling fish whose mature males develop long, flowing fins. They are much gentler and less forceful at feeding time than many larger rainbowfish.

They need a social group with more females than males when possible, plus calm tank mates that let their display behaviour happen safely.

Health risks to know about

Common concerns include starvation, fin damage, poor water quality, parasites, bacterial disease and stress from small groups or busy companions.

Gasping, clamped or torn fins, a hollow belly, colour loss, sores or leaving the group needs prompt investigation.

Tank, water and equipment

Use a mature, fully cycled, heated and gently filtered aquarium with a secure lid, plants, calm cover and open space for group displays.

Keep conditions stable and avoid strong suction or rough decor that can damage long fins.

Food and feeding

Offer a complete fine food that fits their small mouths, with suitable tiny frozen or live foods for variety.

Use small meals in several places because fast tank mates can easily leave them hungry.

Behaviour, tank mates and enrichment

Loose schooling, fin spreading and short male display dances are normal. Persistent hiding or ragged fins suggests a compatibility problem.

Choose peaceful tank mates that will not nip the males' long fins or dominate every feeding.

When to contact an aquatic veterinarian

Get help for gasping, collapse, severe wounds, major swelling, inability to stay upright, rapid unexplained deaths or a problem that continues after water parameters are corrected.

Test ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH, temperature whenever behaviour changes. Water quality is part of the medical history, so record results before contacting an aquatic veterinarian.
