About the Holland Lop Rabbit

Holland lops are small rabbits with compact bodies and ears that hang beside the head. Their size does not reduce their need for a large living area, exercise and rabbit companionship.

Lop ears change airflow and ear anatomy, so routine ear observation is especially important.

Health risks to know about

Important concerns include gut stasis, dental disease, ear infection, narrowed ear canals, heat stress, sore feet and reproductive disease.

Stopping food or droppings is urgent. Head shaking, ear pain, discharge, head tilt or balance changes also needs prompt rabbit-veterinary care.

Housing and daily setup

Use a large secure home base connected to a bigger exercise area with non-slip flooring, hides, tunnels and digging options.

Keep litter and bedding dry, check the ears without inserting swabs, and protect the rabbit from heat and predator pets.

Food and water

Offer unlimited grass hay, suitable leafy greens and a measured amount of quality rabbit pellets.

Provide fresh water in a bowl and monitor eating, droppings and body weight daily.

Behaviour, company and enrichment

Running, chewing, digging and resting with a compatible rabbit are normal. A small body still needs full-sized rabbit enrichment.

Interact at floor level and support the chest and hindquarters when lifting is necessary.

When to call an exotics vet

Get prompt help for breathing changes, collapse, seizures, major bleeding, a swollen abdomen, severe pain, inability to urinate or pass stool, or a sudden loss of balance or movement.

Small mammals often hide illness and can decline quickly. A clear change in appetite, droppings, breathing, movement or normal social behaviour deserves early veterinary advice.
