About the Lionhead Rabbit
Lionhead rabbits have a mane of longer fur around the head and sometimes the flanks. They are social, active rabbits that need space and compatible rabbit companionship.
The mane requires regular grooming, especially behind the ears and around the chest where tangles can hide.
Health risks to know about
Common concerns include gut stasis, dental disease, matting, skin irritation, heat stress, sore feet and reproductive disease.
Stopping food or droppings, a swollen abdomen, overheating, damp skin or tight mats needs prompt rabbit-veterinary advice.
Housing and daily setup
Provide a large home base with a bigger exercise area, non-slip flooring, hides, tunnels, chew items and digging opportunities.
Keep bedding dry and check the mane and skin regularly without turning grooming into a stressful restraint session.
Food and water
Unlimited grass hay should form the foundation, with suitable leafy greens and measured rabbit pellets.
Keep fresh water in a bowl and track appetite, droppings, weight and coat condition.
Behaviour, company and enrichment
Running, jumping, chewing and resting beside a bonded rabbit are normal. Build grooming tolerance with rewards and short sessions.
Many rabbits prefer interaction at floor level. Lift only when necessary with full chest and hindquarter support.
When to call an exotics vet
Get prompt help for breathing changes, collapse, seizures, major bleeding, a swollen abdomen, severe pain, inability to urinate or pass stool, or a sudden loss of balance or movement.
Small mammals often hide illness and can decline quickly. A clear change in appetite, droppings, breathing, movement or normal social behaviour deserves early veterinary advice.
