General information, not a diagnosis

Use this guide to notice and organize information. Contact a qualified veterinarian for medical concerns or urgent change.

About the Rottweiler

The source below highlights hip and elbow dysplasia, inherited eye disease, heart disease, and juvenile laryngeal paralysis and polyneuropathy in its breed health-testing guidance. For owners, these are areas to understand and discuss with a veterinarian—not a prediction that this dog is affected, not a complete list of breed risks and not breeding advice.

Breed traits are general patterns, not promises. Individual health, temperament, age, home and life experience still matter more than the label.

Keep a JLPP DNA result separate from diagnosis

Breed guidance describes JLPP as an autosomal recessive hereditary disease relevant to Rottweilers and explains clear, carrier and affected or at-risk DNA results. Carrier dogs are not currently expected to develop clinical signs, while affected or at-risk puppies may develop breathing difficulty, bark change, weakness, incoordination or swallowing difficulty.

Store the exact laboratory result and avoid translating carrier status into affected status or a current diagnosis.

Record a new bark change, noisy or difficult breathing, choking, swallowing trouble, weakness or incoordination and seek veterinary assessment rather than testing the puppy with exercise.

Share both the DNA report and the clinical timeline because other conditions can produce similar signs and require an examination.

Important limit: A DNA report does not replace a veterinary examination or determine the cause of a current symptom. WiseTails cannot diagnose JLPP, assess breathing safety or provide treatment, prognosis or breeding instructions.
