Build an emergency plan for every animal

Prepare carriers, records, medications, supplies and an evacuation destination before wildfire, flood, power loss or another emergency.

General information, not a diagnosis

Use this guide to notice and organize information. Contact a qualified veterinarian for medical concerns or urgent change.

Decide where every animal can go

List at least two destinations outside the immediate area that can accept each species, such as family, pet-friendly lodging, boarding facilities, shelters or veterinary clinics. Do not assume a general evacuation centre will accept companion animals.

Choose a backup caregiver who can enter the home and knows where animals, carriers, medication and instructions are kept. Practise getting each animal into a secure carrier or transport enclosure calmly.

Create species-specific go kits

Keep identification, current photos, veterinary and vaccination records, medication details, food, water, bowls, sanitation supplies, basic first aid and comfort items together. Add heat, power, water-treatment or habitat supplies required by birds, reptiles, fish and small mammals.

Label carriers and kits with your contact information and the animal’s needs. Rotate food and medication before they expire and keep digital copies of essential records where you can reach them away from home.

Leave early and update the plan

When authorities tell you to evacuate, take animals with you whenever it is safe to do so. Leaving earlier can make transport safer and preserve more destination options.

Review the plan at least twice a year and after a move, new diagnosis, medication change or new animal. Confirm emergency contacts, transport capacity and whether your chosen destinations still accept the species you keep.
