About the Gouldian Finch
Gouldian finches are colourful Australian finches that thrive in stable social groups and warm, predictable environments. They are generally observation birds rather than handling pets.
They can be more sensitive to stress and environmental change than zebra or society finches.
Health risks to know about
Important concerns include respiratory illness, air-sac mites, nutritional deficiency, egg binding, foot problems, obesity and stress-related decline.
Tail bobbing, open-mouth breathing, sitting fluffed and low, reduced droppings, straining or exclusion from the flock needs veterinary care.
Housing and daily setup
Provide a wide flight enclosure with horizontal space, visual cover, varied natural perches, bathing and several feeding locations.
Keep temperature and routine stable, avoid crowding and quarantine new birds before flock introductions.
Food and water
Use a balanced finch diet with suitable greens and controlled seed. Breeding or moulting birds may need a carefully adjusted plan.
Provide clean water and monitor whether every bird can eat without being displaced.
Behaviour, training and enrichment
Flock calling, bathing, courtship and frequent short flights are normal. Social companionship and flight are the main enrichment.
Avoid routine catching and observe posture, breathing and position within the group every day.
When to call an avian vet
Get urgent help for open-mouth breathing, tail bobbing with each breath, collapse, seizures, heavy bleeding, a serious fall, toxin exposure or straining that could indicate egg binding.
Birds often hide illness. Fluffed posture, reduced appetite, fewer droppings, voice changes, weakness, sleeping more or sitting low in the cage deserves prompt advice from an avian veterinarian.
