About the German Shepherd Dog

The source below highlights hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, heart disease, thyroid disease, and degenerative myelopathy in its breed health-testing guidance. For owners, these are areas to understand and discuss with a veterinarian—not a prediction that this dog is affected, not a complete list of breed risks and not breeding advice.

Breed traits are general patterns, not promises. Individual health, temperament, age, home and life experience still matter more than the label.

Rotate purposeful jobs instead of chasing intensity

The German Shepherd Dog parent club describes a versatile working breed and lists activities including obedience, agility, herding, tracking, scent work, search and rescue and service work. For a pet, that versatility supports a varied, reward-based plan rather than a fixed exercise quota or a requirement for protection work.

Choose one appropriate job at a time, such as a scent search, tracking game, retrieve rule, body-awareness exercise or familiar obedience skill.

Pair thinking work with movement that fits the dog’s age, health, footing, weather and current conditioning.

Record willingness, arousal, gait and recovery so the next session responds to the individual dog rather than the breed label.

Important limit: A parent-club activity list shows the breed’s versatility; it does not prescribe a sport, protection training, intensity or duration. High-impact or specialized work requires appropriate health assessment, conditioning, equipment and qualified instruction.
