Cycle the aquarium before fish arrive

A clear tank is not necessarily a ready tank. Establish biological filtration and verify water chemistry before stocking.

General information, not a diagnosis

Use this guide to notice and organize information. Contact a qualified veterinarian for medical concerns or urgent change.

Design for the species

Choose fish only after researching adult size, social structure, swimming space, compatibility, water chemistry, temperature, diet and expected lifespan. Size the aquarium and filter for the animals at adulthood, not their size in the store.

Set up the complete system with conditioned water, filtration, heat or lighting when needed, secure equipment and species-appropriate shelter before animals arrive.

Establish the biological filter

Use a fishless cycling method to develop bacteria that process waste. Test ammonia, nitrite and nitrate with an appropriate kit and use the results—not a fixed number of days or clear-looking water—to decide when the system is ready.

Add animals gradually according to the system’s capacity and continue testing. Avoid overfeeding, sudden large stocking changes and replacing all filter media at once, which can disrupt the biological community.

Treat water as part of the animal

Keep a log of test results, temperature, maintenance, feeding, new animals and behaviour. Watch for gasping, clamped fins, loss of balance, unusual hiding, surface crowding or several fish changing at once.

If ammonia or nitrite is detected after stocking, or several fish suddenly show distress, treat water quality as urgent. Follow a species-appropriate emergency plan and contact an aquatic-experienced veterinarian or qualified specialist.
