About the Dwarf Hamster
Dwarf hamsters include several small hamster species with different temperaments and health tendencies. Exact identification matters, especially for social housing and diet.
They are active burrowers that need deep substrate, a correctly sized wheel and a secure enclosure with very small escape gaps.
Health risks to know about
Common concerns include diabetes in susceptible species, dental problems, respiratory illness, digestive disease, tumours and injuries from falls or fighting.
Excess drinking, weight change, diarrhea, breathing changes, wounds or sudden inactivity needs veterinary advice.
Housing and daily setup
Provide deep burrowing bedding, several hides, tunnels, sand bathing and a solid wheel large enough for a flat running posture.
Solitary housing is the safest default unless the exact species and pair have been assessed by an experienced keeper or veterinarian.
Food and water
Use a complete hamster diet selected for the exact species, with suitable fresh additions and limited sugary treats.
Keep fresh water available and monitor food stores, weight and drinking.
Behaviour, company and enrichment
Burrowing, hoarding, sand bathing and nighttime running are normal. Give quiet daytime rest and plenty of cover.
Use a cup or tunnel for transfers until the hamster is comfortable stepping onto your hands.
When to call an exotics vet
Get prompt help for breathing changes, collapse, seizures, major bleeding, a swollen abdomen, severe pain, inability to urinate or pass stool, or a sudden loss of balance or movement.
Small mammals often hide illness and can decline quickly. A clear change in appetite, droppings, breathing, movement or normal social behaviour deserves early veterinary advice.
