About the Dachshund (all varieties)

breed guidance’s IVDD screening scheme applies to all Dachshund varieties and uses radiographs of calcified discs to support breeding decisions. The scheme also states that a grade changes risk information but cannot guarantee whether an individual dog or its offspring will develop clinical disease.

Breed traits are general patterns, not promises. Individual health, temperament, age, home and life experience still matter more than the label.

Know the early signs of possible disc disease

breed guidance’s Dachshund IVDD scheme describes intervertebral disc disease as painful and potentially serious. Signs can include severe pain, cautious movement, reluctance to move the head or neck, incoordination, new toileting accidents and paralysis; a new neurological or pain change needs prompt veterinary triage.

Record the time and circumstances of a new pain cry, hunched or guarded posture, cautious movement, weakness or loss of coordination without repeatedly testing the dog.

Treat inability to stand or walk, rapidly worsening weakness, paralysis or loss of bladder control as urgent and contact a veterinary clinic immediately.

Move and transport an affected dog as little and as safely as possible according to the clinic’s instructions; do not stretch, manipulate or exercise-test the back.

Important limit: These signs can have several causes and WiseTails cannot diagnose IVDD, localize an injury or grade severity. A normal screening result or family history cannot rule out future disease, and an owner record must never delay veterinary care.
