About the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
The source below highlights heart disease, inherited eye disease, patellar luxation, and hip dysplasia in its breed health-testing guidance. For owners, these are areas to understand and discuss with a veterinarian—not a prediction that this dog is affected, not a complete list of breed risks and not breeding advice.
Breed traits are general patterns, not promises. Individual health, temperament, age, home and life experience still matter more than the label.
If a murmur is found, save the clinical stage
The ACVIM consensus guideline separates canine myxomatous mitral valve disease into clinical stages using veterinary examination and, when indicated, diagnostic imaging and measurements. A murmur, breed label or owner observation alone cannot establish the stage or justify starting, stopping or changing medication.
Save the veterinarian’s exact finding, date, any assigned stage and the reports from imaging or other tests instead of summarizing everything as ‘heart disease.’
Record new cough, breathing change, fainting, collapse, reduced tolerance or sleep disruption with timing and context, then contact the veterinary team for interpretation.
Follow any home measurement method only if the veterinarian has shown when and how to use it for this dog and what threshold should trigger a call.
Important limit: This record does not diagnose MMVD, assign a stage or provide treatment. Similar signs can have other causes, and medication, diet, activity and monitoring decisions must come from the veterinarian or veterinary cardiologist who has assessed the dog.
