About the Campbell's Dwarf Hamster
Campbell's dwarf hamsters are small, active hamsters from Central Asian grasslands and semi-desert. They are often confused or hybridized with winter whites in the pet trade.
They need deep substrate, safe running space and careful attention to diet and social conflict.
Health risks to know about
Diabetes is an important concern, along with dental disease, respiratory illness, digestive problems, tumours and injuries from fighting.
Excess drinking or urination, weight change, diarrhea, breathing changes, wounds or unusual weakness needs veterinary care.
Housing and daily setup
Use a large secure enclosure with deep bedding, several hides, tunnels, sand bathing and a correctly sized solid wheel.
Solitary housing is the safest default. Do not assume two hamsters are compatible because they were sold together.
Food and water
Use a complete dwarf-hamster diet and keep sugary fruits and treats very limited. Scatter feeding supports normal searching.
Provide fresh water and monitor weight, drinking and hidden food stores.
Behaviour, company and enrichment
Burrowing, hoarding and rapid nighttime exploration are normal. Provide several covered routes and quiet daytime rest.
Allow voluntary contact and use a container for transfers until the hamster is comfortable with hands.
When to call an exotics vet
Get prompt help for breathing changes, collapse, seizures, major bleeding, a swollen abdomen, severe pain, inability to urinate or pass stool, or a sudden loss of balance or movement.
Small mammals often hide illness and can decline quickly. A clear change in appetite, droppings, breathing, movement or normal social behaviour deserves early veterinary advice.
