General information, not a diagnosis

About the Bengal

Bengal is a recognized breed type. Breed standards describe a general type, not every individual. Use the breed as helpful context, then let this animal's build, coat, movement, personality and history guide day-to-day care.

Breed traits are general patterns, not promises. Individual health, temperament, age, home and life experience still matter more than the label.

Keep a Bengal PRA-b result tied to the exact variant

The UC Davis Veterinary Genetics Laboratory describes PRA-b as an autosomal recessive retinal condition that can cause progressive vision loss in affected Bengal cats. A DNA result identifies status for this variant; it does not replace an eye examination or explain every vision change.

Save the laboratory, sample date, PRA-b test name and complete genotype rather than a general ‘eye clear’ label.

Do not test vision with heights, sudden obstacles, bright light or frightening movement; record ordinary navigation changes instead.

Ask a veterinarian about new night-time hesitation, persistent pupil change, bumping into objects or other suspected vision change.

Important limit: This university laboratory page covers the PRA-b variant and cannot rule out other eye disease, measure current vision, predict the rate of change in an affected cat or create a personal testing schedule.

Separate Bengal PK-deficiency status from current health

The UC Davis Veterinary Genetics Laboratory describes feline pyruvate kinase deficiency as an inherited, variably expressed hemolytic anemia and lists Bengal as an appropriate breed for the identified variant test. Carrier, affected and current clinical status are different facts and should not be collapsed into one label.

Save the laboratory, sample date, PK-deficiency test name and complete genotype with the cat’s verified identity.

A carrier result does not mean the cat has anemia; an affected genotype still needs veterinary context because severity and timing vary.

Contact the veterinarian about marked lethargy, weakness, weight loss, yellowing of the gums or skin, abdominal enlargement or another concerning change.

Important limit: This source covers one inherited cause of anemia. It does not diagnose current anemia, explain every similar sign, predict severity or timing, or create a personal testing and monitoring schedule.

Give Bengal energy secure, changeable outlets

breed guidance describes Bengals as active, curious cats that often use climbing, chasing, investigation, puzzles and reward-based learning. Provide safe choices without assuming every Bengal needs constant intensity or access to hazards.

Offer a stable vertical route, a ground-level retreat and one short interactive or food-search task in a physically secure room.

Rotate one feature at a time so novelty stays manageable and the cat can choose play, observation or rest.

Secure cupboards, breakables, cords, windows and water hazards before adding movement or puzzle challenges.

Important limit: A breed profile cannot predict one Bengal’s energy, sociability, prey interest, mobility or frustration threshold. Sudden behaviour or activity change can reflect pain, illness or stress and needs individual assessment.
