About the Australian Shepherd
The source below highlights hip and elbow dysplasia, inherited eye disease, and MDR1 medication sensitivity and other condition-specific genetic risks in its breed health-testing guidance. For owners, these are areas to understand and discuss with a veterinarian—not a prediction that this dog is affected, not a complete list of breed risks and not breeding advice.
Breed traits are general patterns, not promises. Individual health, temperament, age, home and life experience still matter more than the label.
Put an MDR1 result where every prescriber can see it
Washington State University’s veterinary pharmacogenetics program warns that dogs with the MDR1 mutation can react severely to some common medications. The test identifies this specific mutation; safe drug selection and dosing still depend on the prescribing veterinarian and the individual clinical situation.
Save the original laboratory result, genotype wording and date in the permanent health record rather than a vague medication-sensitivity tag.
Share the result with the regular veterinarian, emergency clinic and any clinician planning sedation, anesthesia or a new prescription.
Contact the prescribing veterinarian about any concern and never skip, stop, substitute or change a medication or dose through WiseTails.
Important limit: MDR1 status does not predict every adverse reaction and cannot replace the full medication history, examination or current drug guidance. WiseTails does not provide a drug list, dose, alternative medication or treatment instruction.
